The Coles County Sheriff's Office was established in 1831 with Ambrose Yocum as the first sheriff. He served from 1831-1834. The first county jail was built in 1833 and was located on the south side of Charleston near the Town Branch. It was a 1-room log structure. The current jail was completed in 1977 and has a capacity of 165.

Sheriff Martin has been in law enforcement since 1993. He began by serving with the Kansas Police Department for four years before going to Eastern Illinois University. While at EIUPD, he served as a patrol officer, detective, evidence custodian, training officer, and SWAT member. He retired from Eastern in 2021 after 24 years of service, including 5 as chief of police. Sheriff Martin was elected in 2022. He lives in rural Charleston with his wife and three children.
Chief Heleine began his career at the CCSO in 2007 as a correctional officer, quickly transitioning to patrol in 2009. Over the years he has held various positions, including interim sheriff, and is currently serving as the Chief Deputy. In addition to his commitment to law enforcement, Heleine retired from the Illinois National Guard in 2022 as a 1st Sergeant after 21 years of service.
